Francis Henry Richardson (1857-1934) was born in Boston, Massachusetts and studied under William Morris Hunt. In his twenties, he sailed to Paris to join his friends Childe Hassam, Willard Metcalf, among others, to continue his art education at the Academie Julian. There, he studied under Gustave Boulanger, Lucien Doucet, Jules Lefebvre, Jean Paul Laurens, and Benjamin Constant. Richardson went on to enter the annual French Salon competition in 1889-1890 and again in 1894-1899 with portraits, genre paintings, and landscapes. He returned from Europe for good in 1900, and made his home high atop Windmill Hill in Ipswich, MA. Several of his paintings can be seen in the Ipswich Museum, among others. This portrait, an oil on canvas painted in 1886, is signed and dated by Richardson and measures 18 inches tall by 14 inches wide. The frame is a lovely carved piece that measures 25 inches tall by 21 inches wide by 1.75 inches deep. Aside from some minor wear to the frame as shown, this piece is in great condition.
